Quartz Countertops: What the Showroom Doesn't Mention
Part of the countertops guide. Engineered quartz is the most popular surface in American kitchens and the one people most often misunderstand — including the part where it isn't really stone.
The short answer: Quartz is about 90 percent crushed stone held together by 10 percent plastic resin, and that resin explains everything. It never needs sealing and shrugs off lemon juice and wine. But sustained heat scorches it (the slow cooker, not the skillet). Strong alkaline cleaners break it down. And direct Phoenix sun through a window can change its color — the warranties say so. Use trivets, mild cleaners, and a shade or UV film on a sunny run, and it's an excellent surface.
What it actually is
A quartz slab is roughly 90 percent ground-up natural quartz held together by about 10 percent polymer resin, pressed under vacuum and vibration and then heat-cured. Caesarstone's own technical manual puts its slabs at up to 90 percent crushed quartz, combined with polyester resins and pigments.
That 10 percent is the whole story. Everything quartz does well, it does because the resin seals the stone particles into a solid with no pores. Everything quartz does badly, it does because the resin is plastic.
Water absorption comes in at 0.05 percent or less under the standard test (ASTM C97), which is why no quartz countertop is ever sealed. Cambria goes further than "you don't need to" and prohibits it outright: no sealers, penetrants or topical treatments under any circumstances.
Four manufacturers publish full color libraries worth browsing. Caesarstone runs over a hundred colors with a compare tool. MSI's Q collection lets you toggle between a close-up, a room scene, and the full slab. Cambria sorts by the look it's imitating: granite, marble, quartzite, concrete, soapstone. Vicostone publishes about a hundred designs with finishes and product codes.
Heat is the real limit
Use a trivet, always — and here's the reason the showroom won't give you. Quartz passes the laboratory high-temperature test and still comes with a trivet warning, and both are true at once. The lab test measures the surface. Your kitchen tests the resin.
Caesarstone describes the failure as a resin burn: scorch marks, usually brown or yellow, from moderately hot pans left in place for a while. Vicostone's care page names the culprit better than anyone — sustained localized heat from slow cookers or countertop appliances causing thermal shock and cracking. Not the skillet you set down for ninety seconds. The slow cooker that runs eight hours on the same square foot, or the air fryer that lives in the corner.
Cambria's care instructions list the offenders plainly: hot pads or a solid trivet under pots, pans, electric frying pans, griddles, slow cookers, air fryers, roaster ovens and heat lamps. And Cambria states flatly that its product is not heat-proof, chemical-proof, or fracture-proof in any form, which is a more useful sentence than anything on a showroom card.
You'll see "quartz withstands up to 300 degrees" repeated across the internet. That number doesn't appear in any manufacturer's technical documentation we could find, and the sites publishing it don't cite one. What the manufacturers themselves publish is the trivet list above and warranty language excluding thermal shock. Take the warranty seriously and skip the number.
Sunlight is the other one
Treat any counter that takes direct afternoon sun as a design problem to solve before you order. Vicostone's residential warranty says direct and constant sun exposure may change the material's appearance and should be avoided. There's no exception for windows. Cambria's warranty excludes sunlight alongside weather and temperature change, and covers interior use only. Neither company warranties quartz outdoors at all.
Caesarstone argues the softer case: ordinary window glass mitigates the effect, and daylight through a window is unlikely to cause fading unless it lands directly on your countertops for extended periods. In a city that averages 86 percent of possible sunshine and 94 percent in June, that escape clause describes a normal peninsula under a west-facing window.
It's solvable, not a reason to rule quartz out. UV film on the glass, a shade that closes in the afternoon, or a different material on the one run that takes the sun. Caesarstone does sell a UV-rated outdoor line, though it publishes no test standard or exposure data for it. What actually stains it
Acid isn't quartz's problem — strong cleaners are. Caesarstone is explicit about the mechanism: high-pH (alkaline) solutions break down the resin. The banned list across the major brands:
- Oven and grill cleaners, drain products
- Paint removers and furniture strippers
- Undiluted dishwashing detergent and concentrated bleach
- Ammonia cleaners, including the classic blue glass spray
- Anything abrasive: steel wool, scrubbing sponges, scouring powder
On dark quartz, bleach causes permanent ghosting. Permanent marker comes off with 70 percent isopropyl alcohol on a cotton ball. Nobody publishes a safe pH number, so any article that gives you one made it up.
The question worth asking your fabricator
Living with a quartz countertop is safe. Cutting one is not — so ask your fabricator how the shop controls dust. This has become one of the more serious occupational health stories in the trade.
Engineered stone runs over 90 percent crystalline silica. Cutting it dry produces breathable dust that scars lung tissue. NIOSH reports that 51 percent of inspected stone fabrication shops had at least one employee exposed above OSHA's permissible limit. NIOSH's 2026 hazard alert includes a silica-content table by stone type. It shows natural quartzite running higher than most engineered stone.
California moved first and hardest. Cal/OSHA adopted an emergency standard in December 2023 after 95 silicosis cases, four lung transplants and ten deaths in the state's engineered stone industry, and made it permanent in 2025. In May 2026 it voted to begin proceedings toward restricting artificial stone above 1 percent crystalline silica. California has not banned engineered stone — it has voted to start the process, and the distinction matters. Australia did ban it, effective July 2024, while explicitly allowing homeowners to keep the countertops they already have. Installed engineered stone is safe as long as it stays undisturbed.
Arizona adopted the federal silica standard in 2018 and has nothing resembling California's rules. That makes an Arizona fabricator's dust control largely a matter of how the shop chooses to operate — which makes it a fair thing to ask about. Federal OSHA's own guidance names the controls: wet cutting with water delivered at the blade, exhaust ventilation, HEPA vacuuming rather than dry sweeping or compressed air, and exposure monitoring. Four short questions, and a good shop will be glad you asked.
Cosentino took a different route and reformulated Silestone to cut crystalline silica sharply, substituting recycled glass — a form of silica not associated with silicosis. Their published figures are dramatic enough that they should be verified against a current data sheet rather than a press release.
Living with it in Phoenix
Hard water is the daily reality. Phoenix runs 10 to 17.6 grains per gallon, and Scottsdale up to 25. When that water dries on a counter, the calcium and magnesium stay behind as a chalky film. Caesarstone describes the deposits as merging with the surface and getting more visible over time rather than sitting loose on top.
The standard remedy is diluted vinegar, and on quartz it comes with a clock. MSI's guidance: a 1:1 vinegar solution left no more than two minutes, because the acid will eventually etch the resin. Then a thorough rinse and immediate drying. Caesarstone endorses the same solution, plus a nonabrasive gel cleaner applied to the cloth rather than to the counter.
Finish matters more here than people expect. Matte and honed quartz looks wonderful and, per Vicostone's own care page, shows fingerprints and water residue more than polished. That runs directly against the assumption that matte hides everything. In a house with 17-grain water, know it before you order.

Common questions
- Do quartz countertops need to be sealed?
No, and Cambria prohibits it. Water absorption is 0.05 percent or less, so there are no pores for a sealer to fill.
- Can you put a hot pan on quartz?
Briefly, at your own risk. The documented failure is sustained heat: a slow cooker or air fryer running for hours in one spot. That scorches the resin brown or yellow, or cracks the slab from thermal shock.
- Does quartz fade in sunlight?
It can. Vicostone and Cambria both exclude sun exposure from their warranties with no carve-out for windows. In Phoenix, a counter that takes direct afternoon sun is worth protecting with film or a shade.
- Is quartz better than granite?
Different, not better. Quartz never needs sealing and shrugs off acid. Granite handles heat far better and doesn't care about sunlight. The natural stone article covers the other side.
- Can quartz go outside?
Not standard quartz. Cambria and Vicostone both exclude outdoor installation from warranty entirely. Porcelain and sintered slabs are the outdoor answer in this climate.
- Is quartz safe to have in my house?
Yes. The silica hazard is to the people cutting the slab, not to anyone living with it. Australia's ban explicitly allows homeowners to keep installed countertops for that reason.
